“My next steps will be to develop the brand together and open salons and academies across the world in the next few years.”

JB Mazella

What country are you from and where do you live?

I am originally from the South East of France.  I have lived in the UK (London) for the past twenty years but recently moved back to France.

Title of what you do and the company you work with?

I am the Director and Owner of M&P.

Education background (Hair school, art school, no school)?

I did my apprenticeship in a small salon in France.  To pass the general hairdressing exams we had to go to school one day a week. I passed the general exam then I passed a second exam in France called the “Brevet Professionel”.  This is a separate exam that allows you to open your own salon. Without it you cannot be a salon owner. I moved to London and started working for a globally renowned brand where I became one of their Creative Directors.  I held this position for ten years then decided to start something new and created M&P.

What is your signature style/artistic expression?

We believe in a very strong understanding and control of our fundamentals.  The ethos of the brand is “Not just how to cut and colour hair, but why”. First, it is essential for us that every style we do a has a strong technical approach.  Second, even if we work with English precision cutting we have worked in France and we control and master precision styling which is essential for the beauty of any work.  Last, we believe in suitability, so all haircuts and colours are unique to the individual.

What was your career turning point/your big break?

2001- My arrival in London

2011- The Start of M&P

2019- The new direction of our company with my superb team!

What was your scariest and proudest moment in your career?

The scariest was being on stage in front of two thousand people on my first show ever in 2001.  But really, if this moment was magic it was because my mum was in the front row.  To see the smile on her face really made me proud as she is the main reason of my development today with the constant support she always gave me!

What is next for your career goals?

I have a brilliant team of creative individuals.  My next steps will be to develop the brand together and open salons and academies across the world in the next few years.  Arriving soon we have Dubai and Vietnam opening.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in your business?

1- Listen to your heart, there is always the answer within.

2- Learn from who you believe is the very best for you and work harder than anybody else to reach your goals.

3- Never stop, it is not going to be easy…but then again, if it was it would not be worth it!

4- Surround yourself with people that bring you up (chase the narcissist from your life- the ones they call energy vampires are the worst kind because they are masters in disguise).

5- Give – give and give even more, our craft is about sharing which is the most beautiful way to help others.  Always carry on learning for yourself.
