“My signature is organic movement and silhouette when I’m creating. These two elements are the hardest to achieve and make it look natural.”

Andrew Ly

What country are you from, and where do you reside?

I was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I reside in Montreal, Canada.

Title of what you do and if you are aligned with a brand or company.

I’m a freelance beauty director, Oribe Global Ambassador and CAFA Award Winner for Best Hairstylist of the Year 2023.

Education background (school, salons, self-taught)?

Mostly self-taught. School did absolutely nothing for me and gave me nothing.

What is the first creative project that you remember?

My first major contract was to produce the MUGLER campaign when Nicola Formichetti was the creative director. That was the first contract I got when launching my website and personal work.

What is your signature style/artistic expression of your work?

My signature is organic movement and silhouette when I’m creating. These two elements are the hardest to achieve and make it look natural. I love working with shapes and silhouettes and making people wonder how I created the shapes I do for hair.

What is the most fulfilling job you’ve worked on or someone you have worked with?

The most fulfilling part of my job is working with peers I get to call my friends. Meeting the team at Tom Ford was pretty major, as well.

Do you have a career turning point, big break, or person who has helped your career?

I have a great personal agent, Kathleen Canapi, who does a lot for me. I appreciate her a lot. I don’t believe in big breaks. I believe in working hard and reaching your goals. My mom and sister as well. They’re pretty awesome.

What was the scariest and proudest moment in your career?

The scariest was getting the Mugler contract. I was only 24 years old and knew nothing about the industry. I just had my portfolio to rely on. My proudest moment was winning the CAFA Award for Best Hairdresser of the Year award for 2023.

What is next for your career goals?

To work more in NYC. My heart is in NYC, and I plan to spend more time there in 2024 once I get my visa.

What advice would you give to someone starting in your business?

Surround yourself with people who inspire you, support you and love you. Keep creating and pushing your creative boundaries. You’ll be surprised with where it may take you. Don’t ever change who you are, and there’s enough room for all of us.
