World Hair Transplant Repair Day Exposes Black-Market Risks
Each year, the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) dedicates November 11 — World Hair Transplant Repair Day — to spotlighting the growing global crisis of black-market hair transplant clinics and their devastating impact on patients worldwide.
Recent ISHRS surveys reveal a troubling rise in illicit operations, with 59% of hair restoration professionals reporting black-market clinics in their cities, up from 51% just three years ago. These unlicensed centers often lure clients with low-cost promises and deceptive advertising, yet leave behind lasting scars — both physical and emotional.
“These fraudulent clinics masquerade as legitimate medical practices,” explains Dr. Conradin von Albertini, FISHRS, president of the ISHRS. “They attract unsuspecting patients through false advertising and rock-bottom prices, often resulting in permanent damage by unqualified individuals.”
Reports from victims — many suffering from scarring, infections, and over-harvested donor areas — underscore the urgency of the ISHRS’s Fight the FIGHT campaign (Fight the Fraudulent, Illicit, and Global Hair Transplants). Through this initiative, patients can connect with certified surgeons worldwide at HairTransplantRepairDay.org for guidance or pro bono corrective procedures.
The ISHRS also emphasizes the importance of knowing who performs your surgery. Only a qualified surgeon should conduct medical evaluations, draw the hairline, and make incisions. Technicians may assist under supervision, but not perform surgical steps — a distinction often ignored by illegal operators.
To strengthen education and improve repair techniques, the ISHRS hosted a Masterclass in Hair Reconstructive Surgery in Bucharest, Romania, from November 7–9, 2025. The workshop provided live-surgery demonstrations and expert insight into complex corrective procedures.
“Repairing the damage caused by untrained operators requires both artistry and medical precision,” says Dr. Marco Barusco, FISHRS, co-chair of the workshop. “Our mission is to help patients reclaim confidence and to equip surgeons with the skills to restore both form and self-esteem.”
