“I think it comes down to surrounding myself with other like-minded artists, constantly learning new things and continuing to believe in myself no matter what.” – Philip Wollf

What country are you from, and where do you reside?

PW: I was born in Landstuhl, Germany, and spent my early years across Europe before moving to the U.S. in my early teens. I’m now based in Los Angeles, where I work as a cutter, hair stylist and educator for DESIGN.ME.

What is the first creative project that you remember?

PW : I remember making my own superhero outfits out of cardboard paper and coloured markers as a kid. It was one of the first ways I let my creativity shine.

What is your signature style/artistic expression of your work?

PW : For me, it’s all about having fun and creating a connection. As a cutter, that’s where I really thrive, I love using shape and structure to bring a vision to life. I also enjoy sharing what I’ve learned over the years, whether it’s a technique or a creative insight and using that as a foundation to craft looks that feel personal and inspiring for each client.

What is the most fulfilling job you’ve worked on or someone you have worked with?

PW : The most fulfilling part of my job is when I know how much the result of the look affects the client in a positive way. It never gets old.

Do you have a career turning point, big break, or person who has helped your career?

PW : My career has taken many turning points over the span of 28 years. I think it comes down to surrounding myself with other like minded artists, constantly learning new things and continuing to believe in myself no matter what. Maintaining consistency has proven to be a positive thing for me so far, although it can be easier said than done.

What was the scariest and proudest moment in your career?

PW : There were many concerning moments but one of the scariest and yet proudest things in my career was leaving a huge clientele and moving 3000 miles away to a city I only visited a few times in my life, and starting over from scratch.

What is next for your career goals?

PW : What’s next for me at this moment in time is continuing to meet people and connect with them through education. Without ongoing education, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Traveling is also something I deeply value. It opens the door to new ideas, inspires fresh perspectives, and fuels growth, personally and professionally. I’m excited to keep that journey going.

What advice would you give to someone starting in your business?

PW : My advice to the newer generation of hair artists is to understand that this is a long- game career. Literally anything is possible, there are no limits, however it takes patience, hard work and consistency. Mix this with staying involved with ongoing education and you will be able to reach goals you didn’t even know you had.
