Educational background.

Nearly two decades ago, I attended an Aveda Institute in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. After graduating, I joined Erik of Norway, one of the region’s most respected salons. I spent the first year and a half of my career assisting and training under an extraordinary team of mentors who were among the most accomplished stylists in the Midwest. At the time, my color mentor was one of Goldwell’s leading educators, while my haircutting education was rooted in precision, discipline, and the timeless principles of Sassoon. My husband, whose technical expertise has profoundly shaped my career, taught me everything I know about cutting hair and continues to inspire my growth as an artist.

First creative project.

One of the first truly defining moments in my career was working at New York Fashion Week. My first season was under the direction of renowned celebrity and editorial hairstylist Jon Reyman. I was incredibly fortunate to be part of his Fashion Week team, contributing to multiple designers and runway shows over several seasons. It was an unforgettable experience that challenged me creatively and solidified my love for editorial and fashion work.

Signature style/artistic expression.

At my core, I’m a minimalist. I believe the most beautiful hair feels effortless and never appears overworked. I’m continually drawn to timeless shapes and refined silhouettes that transcend trends. When a haircut is crafted with intention, precision, and a deep understanding of the individual wearing it, it remains relevant long after seasonal trends have faded. I’ve always believed that an exceptional haircut will carry you further in this industry than chasing what’s fashionable in the moment.

Most fulfilling project or person you’ve worked with.

Throughout my career, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to work alongside many of the industry’s most respected stylists, photographers, and creative teams. From multiple seasons of New York Fashion Week to editorial shoots and television commercials, every opportunity has been both humbling and creatively fulfilling.

Above all, the greatest privilege has been building a career alongside my husband. Learning from him, collaborating creatively, and sharing this creative life together has been the most rewarding part of my professional life. I’m incredibly proud of everything we’ve built together and even more excited about what lies ahead.

Career turning point/big break.

I’ve been fortunate that my career has been shaped by many meaningful opportunities rather than one defining moment. Being invited into rooms with some of the industry’s most respected artists has continually pushed me to grow, both creatively and technically.

My husband has undoubtedly been my greatest mentor. His commitment to excellence has challenged me to constantly refine my craft and elevate my standards. Along the way, I’ve also had the privilege of educating and demonstrating at Aveda Institutes, which has been especially rewarding. Teaching has deepened my own understanding of the craft while allowing me to give back to the next generation of stylists.

“Building something meaningful is never easy, and it isn’t supposed to be. The moments that challenge you the most are often the ones that shape you into a stronger leader.” – Emily Yance

Scariest and proudest moment

Without question, opening our dream salon has been both the most terrifying and the proudest accomplishment of my career. It challenged us in ways we never anticipated, both personally and professionally. Every obstacle taught us invaluable lessons and ultimately strengthened our vision.

Walking into our salon each day still feels surreal. It’s a space that represents years of hard work, unwavering belief, and countless sacrifices. Taking that leap of faith has already opened doors we never imagined possible, and I truly believe it’s only the beginning.

Career goals.

I’ve always been a dreamer, so my list of goals continues to evolve. More than anything, I want to remain authentic to who I am as an artist while continuing to grow both creatively and personally.

My vision is to continue building the Scottfree brand into something that meaningfully contributes to our industry. Through education, mentorship, and demonstration, I hope to inspire other artists while helping elevate the standards of our profession. If I can leave the industry better than I found it, I’ll consider that my greatest success.

Advice to someone starting a business.

Stay true to who you are. Lead with intention, integrity, and purpose in every decision you make. Building something meaningful is never easy—and it isn’t supposed to be. The moments that challenge you the most are often the ones that shape you into a stronger leader.

Most importantly, enjoy the process. Entrepreneurship is a tremendous responsibility, but it’s also an incredible privilege. There will always be obstacles, setbacks, and uncertainty, but if you stay committed to your vision and embrace the process, those experiences become the foundation of something truly worthwhile.
