“I like to work from the inside out. People’s feelings are very important to me.”

Alkan Emin

What country are you from and where do you live?

I live in Toronto, Canada but I am originally from Northern Cyprus.

Education background (photography, art school, no school)?

I have a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Theatre History with a minor in Art History.  I picked up a camera by accident then I took a few technical photography courses after graduation.  I learnt the rest by trial and error!

Do you have a signature style/artistic expression? How would you describe your work?

I consider myself a portrait artist. I am very inspired by artist like Paolo Roversi, Richard Avedon and Peter Lindbergh.  I like to be very organic when I shoot, so I like to work from the inside out. People’s feelings are very important to me.

What type of images or people do you like to shoot?

I love to shoot anyone. I love to shoot faces with character.  I find the beauty in everyone. It is most important to have a camera in my hand. That is what motivates me.

Do you have a career turning point or big break?

When I was living in Beijing, I got booked to shoot Harper’s Bazaar and Marie Claire then one week later I shot the cover of Cosmopolitan.

What is next for your career goals?

I was recently granted a US green card….NEXT stop New York!!!  That simultaneously fits in with my partner and I opening a model management agency @me.modelmanagement.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in your business?

Always take risks and never give up (I genuinely mean this !!!!)
